Are you suffering from the discomfort and limited mobility of torticollis? With over 34 years of experience, our team of dedicated chiropractors is here to help alleviate your pain and restore your range of motion.
Torticollis, also known as "wry neck", is a condition where the neck muscles contract involuntarily. This causes the head to twist or tilt to one side and results in a limited range of motion as well as mild to severe neck pain.
It can affect a wide range of people, from newborns to adults. It's estimated that 90% of people will experience torticollis at least once throughout their lives.
Acquired torticollis can develop at any time in life due to muscle or nerve injury, infections, cervical spine disorders or musculoskeletal issues such as a tight or shortened sternocleidomastoid muscle. It's common for athletes and people with poor posture or neck trauma to suffer from torticollis.
Congenital torticollis, present from birth, often results from the baby's position in the womb or a difficult delivery. Approximately 1% of babies are born with this condition.
By focusing on spinal alignment and muscle function, our doctors can help reduce muscle spasms, improve neck mobility, and alleviate pain, leading to a better quality of life. We can also help with treating torticollis in infants, ensuring gentle yet effective care for your baby.
Your chiropractor will develop a tailored treatment plan to alleviate your pain and improve the overall function of your neck muscles that may include the following treatments:
Our doctors will diagnose the cause(s) of your torticollis. During your initial consultation, they will take an in-depth medical history, perform a physical exam and may carry out an imaging diagnosis (e.g. X-rays or MRIs).
During your appointment, we will use techniques such as gentle spinal adjustments, joint mobilisations, myofascial release and trigger point therapy to relax tense muscles and reduce inflammation in the neck and surrounding tissues.
We will also give you personalised advice to help address your symptoms such as posture and ergonomic advice as well as personalised stretching and strengthening exercises. We may also prescribe supplements or further medical tests.
The most common indicator of torticollis is decreased range of motion, movement with pain and severe stiffness. You will find it difficult to move your neck normally, and you may notice that your head tilts to one side or is rotated abnormally. This head position can be voluntary or involuntary.
Additionally, you may experience muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders, contributing to discomfort and restricted movement.
Chiropractic care can be very effective in relieving pain and improving mobility for many people with torticollis. Our doctors are highly trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating torticollis using a combination of techniques tailored to each patient's unique needs.
We take your comfort seriously and aim to alleviate pain rather than cause discomfort. Let us know your comfort level during the sessions, and we will adapt our techniques accordingly.
Our appointments run from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity of your condition.
This will be determined based on your specific condition and treatment plan, however many of our patients report experiencing significant improvements after just a few chiropractic sessions.
During your appointment, your chiropractor will perform an assessment, discuss your symptoms, and develop a personalised treatment plan which may include adjustments, exercises, and other therapies whether for you or for baby’s torticollis.
We strive to accommodate urgent cases and offer flexible appointment scheduling.
