on the Sunshine Coast

Are you tired of the debilitating pain and discomfort caused by sciatica? With over 34 years of experience, our dedicated team of chiropractors is here to help you find relief and regain your quality of life.

Understanding sciatica

Sciatica is a common condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down your legs, becomes compressed or irritated. This can lead to a range of symptoms, including sharp pain, numbness, tingling and muscle weakness.

In 90% of cases, sciatica is caused by a herniated disc, but there are other possible causes such as lumbar stenoses, pelvic injury or fracture, spondylolisthesis and (less often) tumours.

Men between 30 and 50 years of age are more likely to have sciatica.

Pregnant women are also at higher risk of developing sciatica because of the additional weight they carry and the resulting change in posture.

Whether your sciatica is a recent development or a long-term struggle, our team of experienced chiropractors would be delighted to assess you and provide effective treatment that will improve your quality of life.

Your questions, answered

Is chiropractic care a suitable treatment for sciatica?

Yes, chiropractic care is a non-invasive and effective option for treating most cases of sciatica.

How long does it take to see improvements with chiropractic care for sciatica?

The number of treatments varies based on the severity and underlying cause of your back pain, but many patients experience relief after just a few sessions. Your chiropractor will create a personalised treatment plan that may include multiple treatments over a few days or weeks.

What can I expect during a chiropractic treatment for sciatica?

During a consultation, your chiropractor may conduct assessments to diagnose the cause of your sciatica, including an in depth medical history, physical examination including range of movement, posture, gait assessment, neurological testing and orthopaedic and if necessary diagnostic imaging.

They may then use hands-on adjustments, gentle spinal manipulations, and other techniques to realign your joints, discs and spine to help alleviate sciatica.

They may also provide personalised advice to help reduce the risk of further injury and pain.

How long does a typical chiropractic session for sciatica last?

Our treatments typically last between 15 and 30 minutes, but this can vary depending on your specific needs. An initial consultation is 30 minutes or longer depending on your history.

Are X-rays or MRIs always necessary for diagnosing sciatica?

No, not always. In some cases, your chiropractor may be able to diagnose and treat your sciatica based on a physical examination and medical history.

Do I need a referral from my GP to see your team for sciatica?

No, you don’t. As our doctors are primary health care practitioners, you do not need a referral to see us. Feel free to book an appointment or ask us any questions.

Will my private health insurance cover the cost of the treatment?

Many insurance providers cover chiropractic care for neck treatment. Check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage. We are a BUPA and Medibank preferred provider.

Should I continue with chiropractic care even after my sciatic pain is gone?

Many patients choose to continue with chiropractic care to maintain their spinal health and prevent future injuries.
